Tom Miller
Author and senior analyst, Gavekal Research
Tom Miller is an author and senior analyst at Gavekal Research, a global independent research firm based in Hong Kong. He mainly writes about China and India, focusing on economic affairs and geopolitics. After studying at Oxford and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, Tom spent 14 years in Beijing. A fluent Mandarin speaker and former journalist, he has reported from a dozen countries in Asia. His latest book, China’s Asian Dream: Empire Building Along the New Silk Road, was published in February 2017. His first book, China’s Urban Billion: The Story Behind the Biggest Migration in Human History (2012) was translated into Chinese.
In addition to speaking at Gavekal’s seminars in the world’s financial centres, Tom regularly gives talks at think tanks (CSIS, Stimson Center, Chatham House, RUSI), universities (Oxford, SOAS), conferences (The Economist, UBS, CLSA) and other institutions (US State Department, World Bank, Foreign Correspondents’ Club of China). He has been quoted by the Financial Times, Economist, New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Guardian, Time Magazine, Reuters and Bloomberg, and appeared on the BBC, CNN and CNBC. From time to time, he also reviews books for The Spectator. Tom currently lives in Oxford, frequently travelling to Asia.
